Business days (also called working days or weekdays) are the days of the week when most commercial and government operations take place — typically Monday through Friday. Weekends (Saturday and Sunday) and public holidays are excluded from business day counts. This distinction is critical in legal contracts, shipping estimates, financial settlements, and project timelines where deadlines are specified in business days rather than calendar days.

Many legal and financial processes specify deadlines in business days. A '5 business day' processing time means 5 working days, which could span 7 or more calendar days depending on weekends and holidays. Miscounting business days can result in missed deadlines, late payments, penalty charges, or contract violations. Project managers use business days to create realistic schedules, and HR departments calculate payroll, vacation accrual, and notice periods in working days.

The simplest calculation counts weekdays between two dates. Adding holiday awareness increases accuracy — each country has different public holidays that reduce the working day count. Some industries also observe additional non-working days (banking holidays, exchange closures). When adding business days to a date, you must skip weekends: adding 5 business days to a Friday means the result is the following Friday, not Wednesday. Leap years and month-end boundaries add additional complexity to date arithmetic.

Always clarify whether a deadline is in business days or calendar days. Include a buffer of 1-2 business days for critical deadlines to account for unexpected holidays or closures.
